A man in a white tank top and a loosened red tie sits on office steps at sunset with his head in his hand. On his left is a cardboard box full of desk things. On his right a big cardboard sign reads UNEMPLOYED above a sad face. A black sign in the lobby window says LAYOFFS TODAY. The same man sits on the steps beside a cardboard box that reads UNEMPLOYED above a sad face. A paper cup that says ANOTHER MONDAY lies on the sidewalk. Tap the photo to stamp it

  1. The badge

He showed up early for eleven years. Same desk. Same mug. That morning the badge still opened the door.

  2. The sign

By lunch a black sign stood in the lobby window. Two words between two red lines. Everybody walked past it and nobody read it twice.

  3. The box

At 5:59 they handed him a cardboard box. In went the plant and the keyboard and the mug that says GOOD DOG GOOD WORK.

  4. The door

The glass door closed behind him. The others walked back in with their bags. His coffee hit the sidewalk and rolled away.

  5. The marker

He sat down on the steps and found a marker at the bottom of the box. He wrote one word on the cardboard and drew a small sad face under it. That word is the ticker.
